Ben Stokes warned by umpires for applying saliva on the ball
Ben Stokes got into a bit of trouble early in the 2nd ODI in which he was spotted applying saliva on the ball. As we know with the onset of the covid pandemic ICC has banned the usage of saliva on the ball since last year, which the bowlers and fielders resort to in order to maintain the shine on the ball to assist in its swing.
The act was probably erroneously done out of past habits when in pre-covid times players used to apply saliva on the ball to maintain its polish.
When Ben Stokes warned by umpires and Jos Buttler was intimated, that any such subsequent acts will make the umpires deduct 5 penalty runs from England.
The ball was subsequently sanitized and the match resumed.
However, Stokes played a vital part in England’s win in the game when he blew away the Indian bowling with belligerent innings of 99 off 52 balls including 10 sixes.
