BCCI would retain the hosting rights in case the contingency plan has to activated for T20 World Cup. Looking at the raging pandemic that has hit India again, the possibility of hosting the T20 World Cup in the country is looking bleak. But BCCI, Board of Control for Cricket in India has not given up hopes. Although UAE is going to host the tournament if the same conditions prevail in the country during October-November, the months in which T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place. The event will start on October 18 and would come to a culmination on November 15.

BCCI would not lose the hosting rights

However, the board believes that it is a contingency plan and hopes to organize the event in the country. Even if the tournament has to be shifted to the UAE, the board plans to retain T20 World Cup rights with itself.

Dhiraj Malhotra, General Manager of the BCCI said that it was too early to say something concrete on the matter and the UAE is a contingency plan. But even if this has to be done the tournament would move to the UAE with hosting rights staying intact with the BCCI. BCCI would retain the hosting rights in case the contingency plan has to activated for T20 World Cup.

Before this latest surge of COVID 19 had hit India, the board had planned to host the matches in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Dharamshala, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow. These nine places were the shortlisted venues for T20 World Cup. But right now India’s health infrastructure is under the radar and the picture is not pretty. BCCI would retain the hosting rights in case the contingency plan has to activated for T20 World Cup.

In this condition, the board has no option but to wait for the situation to become better. T20 World Cup would be possible only when the travel bans imposed on many countries are lifted. If the fans would like to believe that it does happen and the T20 World Cup does take place in India, we can be sure of no crowd in the stadiums. Though it is a lesser price to pay compared to moving the tournament out of the country.

16 teams are going to participate in the tournament which makes it huge and there are 4 grounds in UAE where international matches can be hosted. BCCI would retain the hosting rights in case the contingency plan has to activated for T20 World Cup. UAE had successfully hosted the IPL 2020 which makes us hopeful for the success of this tournament too if the need arises.
