There was a lot of speculations about whether Ashwin has an outside chance to make the T20I World cup squad. Finally, the Indian selectors came up with two pleasant surprises. One was the announcement of MS Dhoni as the mentor of the World up squad and the second was the inclusion of Ashwin in the World cup squad.
Fans of Ashwin and many cricket experts were delighted at the two selections. This is going to be Ashwin’s return to T20I cricket after 4 years. He last played for India in T20Is in the West Indies tour in 2017.
Ashwin has 52 wickets in 46 T20I matches for India at an excellent economy of 6.98. His IPL economy in the last two years has been a little higher than 7 and he has taken 25 wickets in the last two completed seasons ( excluding the current season ). His overall IPL economy rate is 6.9 and he has taken 139 wickets in 159 games.
Chief selection Chetan Sharma hailed Ashwin’s performances in IPL. As a reason for picking Ashwin, he said.
“Ravi Ashwin has been playing in the IPL regularly. He has performed well there. When you go into the World Cup, you need an Off Spinner, everyone has an idea that the Wickets in the UAE will get slower as IPL will also played there.”
Ashwin is naturally delighted at his return to the T20I format. In his Twitter feed, he mentioned ” “I wrote this quote down a million times in my diary before putting this up on the wall! Quotes that we read and admire have more power when we internalise them and apply in life. Happiness and gratitude are the only 2 words that define me now.”
Ashwin also shared a picture of what he wrote 4 years ago on the wall of his house after he was excluded from the white ball team.
The tweet of Ashwin is as under.
