Ravichandran Ashwin ‘s name will attain legendary status in Indian cricket . Ten years after making his test debut Ashwin reaches the coveted figure of 400 test wickets in his 77th test for India . He has thus become the 4th Indian bowler after Kapil Dev , Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh to achieve this great feat. Kumble leads the tally for India with 619 wickets followed by Kapil Dev with 434 wickets .
In terms of number of tests played , Ashwin became the 2nd fastest bowler in test cricket history to take 400 wickets after Muralitharan did it in 72 tests.
Ashwin made his test debut in 2011 and from the start itself he used to get truckloads of wickets in Indian conditions . He took his time to gather success in overseas conditions but finally managed it in the recently concluded Australia series where he took 11 wickets in 3 tests helping India in a series win.
Ashwin incidentally was the fastest Indian bowler to get to100, 200 , 300 test wickets also . He dismissed Darren Sammy in 2013 to complete 100 wicket milestone . Next it was Kane Williamson for his 200 in 2016 and Lahiru Gamage for his 300 in 2017. Finally he reached his 400th wicket milestone by getting Jofra Archer .
Incidentally Ashwin was the fastest to 300 test wickets achieving the same in 54 tests , two less than the legendary Dennis Lillee
Ashwin is getting better with experience and if fitness permits there will be more bad news for overseas batsmen travelling to play series in Indian conditions.
