Ashleigh Barty: From big bash cricket to Wimbledon champion

Australia has got their first women champion in Wimbledon on July 10 2021. After a three-set final, Ashleigh Barty won her first Wimbledon final to create history in more ways than one.

To the Australian cricket fans, Ashleigh Barty is a familiar name, a fact possibly not known to the majority of cricket fans across the world.

Barty was into tennis only before she switched to cricket around 2014. She played women’s cricket for Queensland and in one of the local games scored a stroke-filled 63 to announce her cricketing talents. Soon she was selected into the Brisbane Heat squad and played in the women’s big bash league during the years 2015-16. She represented heat in 10 matches mainly as a right-handed batsman who could bowl left-arm medium pace. Ashleigh Barty: From big bash cricket to Wimbledon champion.

However, she broke her self imposed exile on tennis and went back to the tennis court. Since then cricket’s loss was tennis’ gain as she took her tennis to a different level and now ranks amongst the top 3 in the world.

Thus Barty is another of the multi-talented sports personalities that cricket has earlier seen in Dennis Crompton ( who played for England in both cricket and football ), Vivian Richards ( played soccer for Antigua), Jonty Rhodes ( played hockey apart from cricket) and AB de Villiers to name a few.
