The Ashes series of 2021-22 is right at our doorsteps and the countdown is in the final lap now for this much awaited Australia v England clash . As a part of our Ashes countdown,  we look back at Ian Botham heroics in England’s triumphant Ashes campaign in Australia in 1986/87 in this article.

Botham has been Australia’s nemesis since his debut and at Brisbane he played an absolute lethal knock to set up the series for Australia in that 1986/87 series .

England was coming from a horror summer having lost both their home series vs India and New Zealand and not to speak of their 0-5 whitewash to the mighty West Indies in the Caribbean. They started this series as underdogs and needed a great start to their Ashes campaign

Hence, batting first England started well with Bill Athey(76) , skipper Mike Gatting (61), Allan Lamb (40) and David Gower (51) setting up a great launching pad for Ian Botham to come and destroy the Aussie attack.

Botham started steadily giving himself some time to sight the bowling and then he unfurled his array of shots and no bowler was spared. Bruce Ried was straight driven over his head ,which started the onslaught. Scorching drives and cuts followed . Full balls were driven disdainfully, anything short was cut or hooked savagely. Botham was liking the pace of the Brisbane pitch and was driving savagely on the rise . After reaching his 100 he shifted gears further and took 22 in a Merv Hughes over with cavalier hitting . In all ” Beefy” hit 13 fours & 4 sixes off 174 balls for his 138 as England piled on 456.

Australia were dissappointing in both the innings having had to follow on . Most batters got set and then got out as they were bowled out for 248 & 282 , handing England a small target of 75 to win the 1st test which the tourists did .
Feeding off Botham’s great start in that 1st test , England went on to win the series 2-1.
