Mathews contemplating retirement in darkest phase of Srilankan cricket

Srilanka is going through one of the worst phases of their cricket history. In recent times they have lost the ODI series vs Bangladesh and then thrashed by England 3-0 & 2-0 in the T20I & ODI series respectively at the UK. Mathews is a highly successful player for Srilanka having played in 90 tests. 218 ODIs and 78 T20Is for his country. Has aggregated 5000 plus runs in both tests and ODIs. If he indeed makes his retirement official before Srilanka’s home white ball series against India. It will be a huge blow to Srilankan cricket as in these difficult times Mathews’ experience is still an invaluable asset for the younger players of the Srilankan team. Moreover, Mathews even though ageing and has had his injury concerns can still perform at a good level.

Srilanka has already lost Thisara Parera who has recently retired from international cricket to play in global T20 leagues. Another retirement of a capable player at this point is the last option that Srilanka cricket wants.
