India started well with a 1st wicket stand of 60 between KL Rahul (23) and Shikhar Dhawan (35). However, 3 quick wickets reduced India to 82/3 before Kohli and Rahane got together in a solid partnership. Rahane (81) finally got amongst the runs and Kohli revived his Edgbaston 100 by playing. Another resolute innings negotiating the swing of Anderson and others beautifully. However, at 97 Kohli shaped to cut Rashid and the away spin took the edge & landed in Stokes’s palms. India finally managed 329 in their first innings with Broad, Anderson and Woakes taking 3 wickets each for England. A recap of India’s win at Trent Bridge (2018).
England actually started well with a 54 run opening stand between Cook (29) and Jennings (20) but since then lost wickets at regular intervals to the Indian seamers who this time had an unlikely hero in Hardik Pandya who used the swinging conditions beautifully to rattle the England middle order by taking 5/28 in just 6 overs which included the prize wickets of Joe Root (16) and Jonny Bairstow (15) both of whom were caught off the outside edges as the ball moved off the seam. Shami & Ishant bowled superbly too as England were bowled out for 161 & thus conceding a big lead of 168 runs.
In the 2nd innings, India had another fine opening stand of 60. Before both Rahul (36) and Dhawan (44) failed to convert their great starts. There was a big stand of 111 runs between Pujara (72) and Kohli. The Indian captain finally got his 100 in the 2nd innings after another superb show against the England seamers before falling for 103. Later Hardik Pandya scored a quick unbeaten 52 to take India to 352 for 7 declared. Adil Rashid took 3 wickets in the 2nd innings.
With a huge target of 521 to chase, England top order imploded again against the pace trio of Ishant Sharma. Bumrah and Shami as they were reduce to 62/4. Before Ben Stokes (62) and Jos Buttler (103) put up a brilliant stand of 169. However, that only delayed the inevitable as Bumrah’s (5/85) quality fast bowling nullified. England’s fight and took India to an emphatic 203 run win early on the 5th day.
There were many heroes for India in this test but finally the man of the match went to Virat Kohli for his 97 & 103.
