A dream debut turns into a suspension: Ollie Robinson

The first test between New Zealand and England had barely ended with the two test debutants getting all the accolades but soon comes the thunderbolt from ECB.

“England and Sussex bowler Ollie Robinson has been suspended from all international cricket pending. The outcome of a disciplinary investigation following historic tweets he posted in 2012 and 2013,” said an ECB statement.

A dream debut turns into a suspension: Ollie Robinson. The was a real shocker. Here is a test debutant who did nothing wrong in his debut test at Lords — A ground that can intimidate any newcomer making his debut. Robinson was the best English bowler in the test which consisted of legends Anderson and Broad and the electric Mark Wood. With returns of 4/75 and 3/26, he took 7 wickets on his test debut at Lords. Add to that his polished 42 in the England 1st innings and his crucial stand with centurion Rory Burns saved England from a bigger deficit on first innings.

27-year-old Robinson made some unsavoury racist tweets in 2012 and 2013 when he was 19. In those tweets, he made some derogatory remarks about Muslims being link with terrorism. However, some unsavoury remarks about Asian women which were racist in nature.

Robinson apologised for his tweets of 8 years ago after the 1st days play in which both teams lined up. At the start of play to show the moment of unity against discrimination. Those 8 year old tweets got viral soon afterwards leading to Robinson’s genuine apology .

The ECB statement as quoted above clearly means that Ollie Robinson will remain suspended from international cricket pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation. Thus no more tests or international matches for a while for the debutant after his first test. This is a weird situation that Robinson is finding himself. It has already led to a hot debate on social media.

Though Joe Root made it clear in his statement that the dressing room will support Robinson. This decision by ECB means a big jolt for Robinson’s immediate career prospects.

It now remains to be seen how quickly this matter is handle by ECB so that Robinson’s name is clear.
