There has been a recent current trend of many Indian players, who after their under 19 success has failed to make it big in Indian cricket, going for retirement to play league cricket in the USA to earn a better living. In the last few months, we have heard of many familiar names in first-class cricket who have retired from Indian cricket to look for overseas options . 5 Indian players who left Indian cricket to play in the USA Few of them listed as under-
Unmukt Chand, who seven years ago was considered as one of the future best next generation of batsmen from India, has retired from Indian cricket only at 28.
Chand was the Indian under 19 captain in the 2012 World cup and his brilliant 111 in the final vs favorites Australia won the title for India.
That innings was poised to set up a long India career for him as he became India A captain. However, things did not turn out the way it was expected and he started to drop down in the pecking order. Averages returns at domestic level and none too impressive IPL stints gradually pushed him away from the selectors radar gradually.
Chand will move to USA where he will be signing a 3-year deal with USA’s Major League Cricket (MLC).
Chand believes that subsequently a lot of Association politics was behind his, not being able to make good at the national level. He was not getting enough matches to play for Delhi, hence he moved to Uttarakhand. In IPL he was promised by the Mumbai Indians that will be picked up at the auction in one particular season but it did not happen.
Chand finally made the painful decision to leave Indian cricket when he did not get a match for Delhi this season. He blames DDCA for indulging in politics.
Chand has played 67 first-class games scoring 3379 runs at a 31.57 average. He scored 300 runs in 21 IPL matches at 15 average and 100 strike rate.
Smit Patel was a part of the 2012 under 19 World cup winning team with Unmukt Chand. He was considered promising and good enough to go all the way. However, with Parthiv Patel being the first choice keeper of Gujarat, Smit did not get many openings. Later he played Ranji for Tripura, Goa and Baroda.
Smit scored 3278 first-class runs in 55 games at an average of 39.49 with 11 centuries. He also played in 43 List A matches and 28 T20s, scoring 1234 and 708 runs, in the two formats respectively.
Thus like Unmukt at 28, Smit also has decided to move to USA for playing league cricket there.
Siddharth Tribedi is a fimilar name in IPL circuit having played for Rajasthan Royals from 2008 to 2013 and shared dressing room with legends like Shane Warne and Rahul Dravid. He has won IPL with Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural year 2008. He has taken 65 wickets in 76 IPL matches at 7.59 economy. Tribedi played for Gujarat in Ranji Trophy since 2002 season. He played 82 first-class matches & took 268 wickets. Trivedi did well in List A matches picking up 107 wickets. In 103 T20 matches, he has taken 103 wickets. He was never considered for Indian colours and finally af 38 he has decided to join United States Minor League Cricket franchise St Louis Americans.
Manan Sharma is the son of former Indian cricketer Ajay Sharma, He was in the 2010 under 19 world cup squad and shared dressing room with many legendary Delhi players such as Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan & Rishabh Pant
He has also announced his retirement from Indian cricket to look for opportunities in cricket in California USA.
A left-arm spinner, in List A cricket, he picked up 78 wickets at an economy rate of 4.38. Sharma has taken 113 first-class wickets and scored 1208 runs. In the 26 T20s, he has scored 131 runs and also picked up 32 wickets in the format. He was bought by KKR in 2016 edition of IPL but did not play any match.
Milind Kumar is another Indian domestic player who retired from cricket to play in the USA minor league. He played for Delhi, Sikkim, and Tripura in domestic cricket. He also played for the IPL franchise Royal challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils a few years ago
Milind has played 46 first-class matches wherein he has scored 2988 runs and picked up 33 wickets. In 65 List A games, Kumar scored 2023 runs and took 12 wickets. In T20s, in 58 matches he has hit 1176 runs and scalped 5 wickets.
