Jos Buttler’s brutal knock of 83 notout off 52 balls ensured that England make short work of a moderate target of 157. Though Jason Roy (9) and Dawid Malan (18) went relatively cheaply, Jos Buttler was in vintage form taking on the Indian bowlers specially Yazuvendra Chahal and hit him down the ground for towering sixes . England scored around 60 in powerplay and from that they never looked back with Buttler and Bairstow (40 off 28 balls) simply blazing away and never let the match go out of England’s control . Bairstow settled down as time wore on and he looked menacing like Buttler specially towards the end of the innings as the Indian bowling hardly made much impact .
Earlier Virat Kohli’s masterclass innings of 77 notout off 46 balls saved India the blushes. It was not a pitch where one can go out all guns blazing from the start . There was some movement off the pitch and some spin too and Kohli looked as if he was batting on a different level compared to other Indians . India lost cheap wickets in powerplay with Rahul’s defence breached by a Mark Wood delivery of searing pace . Wood was bowling at top speed and looked lethal in the first 3 overs getting 3/14 . Archer too generated speed and took a fine catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma(15), back for this match, as he tried to deflect Wood down leg side. Ishan Kishan (4) batted at 3 but went cheaply pulling Jordan and skying a catch to Buttler.
Rishabh Pant looked at ease for his 25 off 20 balls and just as a partnership was building, Kohli’s ill advised 3rd run had Pant runout. Shreyas Iyer (9) looked uncomfortable against pace and Hardik (17) could not fire . It was only Kohli’s batting brilliance and his dazzling strokeplay against Mark Wood towards the end of Indian innings that took India to a reasonable total of 156/6 , 56 of those coming in last 4 overs .
Buttler for his spectacular batting was the player of the match . Toss is turning out to be very crucial in this series with teams winning them are chasing and winning games .
Today again India made some poor decisions in the team composition and changed the batting number of Ishan kishan to 3 , who looked so good while opening in his debut match . Also playing with only 5 bowlers to strengthen the batting is a risky thought process and it proved costly while defending totals in 1st and 3rd match.
