Virat Kohli is yet to win an IPL crown but till date he remains the most successful Indian batsman of the event with dominating performances. In the 2016 edition he was in majestic form and took RCB to the finals but finished runner up. However he played some of his best IPL cricket that season and was in ominous touch . His glorious innings of 113 off 50 balls vs Punjab was one heck of an exhibition and and probably one of the finest ever IPL knocks. It carried more weight as it was scored with a hand injury involving 8 stitches .
RCB was sent to bat 1st by Kings XI Punjab ( now Punjab Kings) with the match reduced to 15 overs due to rain . Gayle and Kohli opened and after 3 quiet overs for 17 runs , Gayle cut loose with some enormous sixes to put the Punjab bowling on the sword. Soon Kohli got going and started playing stupendous shots as the spinners Carriappa and Axar Patel were taken to the cleaners . Whenever the Pacers came to bowl Kohli was driving and cutting them with power and finesse while the ball kept disappearing to all parts of the ground . Some magnificently hit 6s off the spinners straight down the ground and over mid wicket followed . Kohli had a blazing 147 run stand with Gayle for 1st wicket till Gayle(73 off 32) departed . De Villers and Rahul went cheaply but Kohli looked in imperious form now duly getting his 100 and celebrating in style indicating his injured hand .
After his 100 he flicked and lofted Sandeep Sharma, Punjab’s most economical bowler for boundaries followed by a majestically stepped out straight drive past the bowler that was worth alone the match receipts . At 113 off 50 balls he finally was caught in the deep and left to a massive standing ovation by the Bangalore crowd . He hit 12 fours and 8 sixes in his spectacular innings as RCB totalled 211/3 in 15 overs.
Punjab was never in the hunt and kept losing wickets to reach 120/8 when rain intevened again and stopped the play for good. RCB won by 82 runs on DLS method.
However more than the result , the game was remembered for Kohli’s imperious century with injured hand .
